We are looking for a talented student to join our team for our School To Work , Purchasing in Troy, MI.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

The Cummins-Meritor Cooperative Education Student who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Business management, Supply Chain, Data Analytics or other related fields. The primary role of the school-to-work - Purchasing is to support the procurement process for industrial goods and services essential to our operations. This internship offers a hands-on experience in understanding the intricacies of supply chain management, vendor relations, negotiation techniques, and cost analysis within an industrial setting. You will assist in various tasks ranging from vendor research and selection to purchase order processing, contributing directly to the efficiency and success of our purchasing operations.

  • Assist in identifying potential vendors for industrial goods and services.

  • Conduct market research to evaluate vendor capabilities, pricing, and product/service quality.

  • Collaborate with the purchasing team to make informed decisions regarding vendor selection.

  • Support the creation and processing of purchase orders using procurement software or enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.

  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of purchase orders, including item specifications, quantities, and delivery schedules.

  • Coordinate with vendors and internal stakeholders to confirm order details and resolve any discrepancies.

  • Help maintain positive relationships with existing suppliers by facilitating communication and addressing any issues or concerns.

  • Assist in evaluating supplier performance based on factors such as delivery timeliness, product quality, and responsiveness.

  • Contribute to the negotiation of contracts, pricing agreements, and terms of service with suppliers.

  • Compile and analyze data related to purchasing activities, such as spending patterns, cost savings, and supplier performance metrics.

  • Prepare reports and presentations to communicate key insights and recommendations to management.

  • Support ongoing process improvement initiatives by identifying areas for efficiency gains and cost reduction.

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and draw actionable conclusions.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.

  • Detail-oriented and organized, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Prior internship or coursework related to purchasing, supply chain management, or procurement is a plus.

  • Ability to learn on the job in a dynamic environment while balancing multiple priorities.

  • Ability to work independently and within teams as needed.

  • Strong teamwork and ability to interact with all levels of the organizations.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.

Education, Licenses, Certification

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Business management, Supply Chain, industrial engineering, Data Analytics or other related fields

  • Post-Secondary:

  • Must carry a minimum of 12 credit hours during the fall and spring semesters.

  • Must have a minimum of 2.5 GPA.

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary rateis commensurate with year in school. Additional benefits vary between locations and include options such as our 401(k) Retirement Savings Plan, Cash Balance Pension Plan, Medical/Dental/Life Insurance, Health Savings Account, Domestic Partners Coverage and a full complement of personal and professional benefits.
