This is an exciting opportunity in Shoreview, Minnesota for a Power System Project Engineer. Cummins USA is where you can work on industry leading project engineering projects such as New Product Development, Value Package Introduction and Systems Product Validation.

Your impact will happen in these and other ways:

  • Applies basic knowledge of engineering principles and practices to assigned tasks. Assists in developing technical specifications, implementing designs, and delivering high performance, low-cost equipment or system results integrated with customers’ solutions.

  • Interfaces with sales and marketing teams to design and deliver solutions.

  • Uses prescribed and innovative methods, and works with adequate guidance.

  • Participates as a team member and actively contributes towards team goals.

  • Carries out partially defined and moderately complex tasks.

  • Demonstrates good understanding and applies knowledge of an engineering discipline.

  • Applies engineering and/or scientific skills and continues to develop experience in creating engineering solutions.

Skills and Experience Required:


Installation Quality Assurance (IQA) - Has a basic understanding of the Installation Review Process, including the tools and processes associated with the various markets.

Cross-Functional Design Review - Can conduct a cross-functional design review with limited guidance. Has completed at least one formal design review, either independently or with assistance.

Product Validation - Understands the measures of data quality, methods of analysis and available tools. Includes the understanding of the work flow required to schedule, install, setup, calibrate, and operate the equipment associated with testing.

Project Management - Can apply the principles, techniques, and procedures of project management, and is able to use the tools appropriately as part of their work with limited assistance.

Manage Customer Relationships - Basic understanding of techniques and tools to enhance productivity (i.e. schedules, appointments, call plans, etc). Has a basic understanding of attitudes and behaviors to establish relationships and build trust. Understands the need to and responds with the appropriate time frame to customer needs."


  • 3 post graduate years of experience

  • 2 years managing projects related to;

  • Switchgear – Requires a basic understanding of typical low-voltage and medium voltage switchgear designs.

  • Generator Sets – Requires a basic understanding of the typical features of medium sized (19kW to 4MW) diesel and gas generator sets. Position will require an understanding of the basic generator set controls used in paralleling applications.

  • Automatic Transfer Switches – Requires a basic understanding of the typical features of an automatic transfer switch and the methods used to externally control their operation.

  • Power System Architecture – Requires a basic understanding of the typical power system components that are frequently found at the incoming distribution level of industrial and commercial facilities.

  • Plans and Specifications – Requires a fundamental understanding of how to read and review project plans and specifications.

  • System Control Components – Should have some basic experience with system control components found in paralleling applications. Position requires a basic capability to program Allen Bradley and SchneiderPLCs. Should be familiar with programming HMI’s and third-party control devices.

  • Communication Networks – Requires basic experience with the hardware, software and protocols of common industrial communication networks such as ModBus RTU, Modbus TCP/IP, LonWorks, and BacNet. Should have some experience configuring managed Ethernet switches using vendor recommended settings or completing the settings with some supervision and the fundamentals of Ethernet networks.

  • Project Drawings – Requires a basic understanding of different types of typical project drawings: Outline, One-line, Three-line, Schematic, Interconnect, Riser, and Site. Position will require the use of AutoCAD Electrical to produce simple drawings or update existing drawings.

  • Operating Sequences – Requires a basic understanding of typical power system sequences and be able to read and review a sequence of operation and understand how the major components of a system are expected to operate. Based upon written sequences, must be able to explain how the system should operate and be able to anticipate common first-level failures and their impacts to the power system.

  • Trouble Shooting Control Systems – Position requires some experience with basic paralleling control system trouble shooting techniques.

  • Protective Relays – Requires a very basic understanding of power system protective relay principles and hardware.

  • Safety – Requires a basic understanding of NFPA70E and its impacts to proper PPE requirements on a job-site. Must be willing to follow Cummins' safety policies and procedures and also willing to follow site specific requirements as communicated by site facility personnel and adhere to the more stringent of the two.

Required Education, Licenses or Certifications

Bachelor of Science (or equivalent degree) in Electrical Engineering

Base salary rate commensurate with experience.
