This is an exciting opportunity in Cookeville, TN for a Laboratory Operations Manager. Cummins USA is where you can work on industry leading engineering projects such as New Product Development, Value Package Introduction and Systems Product Validation.

Your impact will happen in these and other ways:

Serves as group lead on projects and work assignments under minimum supervision.

Applies sound knowledge of lab operations principles and practices to lead teams of technicians in the assigned test area.

Works with laboratory customers to understand test requirements and allocates appropriate resources to meet those requirements.

Ensures that lab instrumentation is traceable and technicians have proper training.

Develops and documents processes to meet customer and certification requirements.

Leads significant efforts to improve lab capabilities, utilization and operational efficiency.

Organizes collaborate efforts with other engineering disciplines to resolve issues and drive continuous improvement.

Leads a small technical group and works under minimal supervision.

Provides guidance, sets expectations, clarifies responsibilities, and provides feedback for project team members in accomplishing tasks and goals.

Participate as a key contributor and assigns work to meet group commitments.

Influences at department or program management level.

Provide input on program-related decisions.

Proposes innovative initiatives and projects.

Contributes to the solution of complex technical problems; provides resources, removes barriers and ensures application of common approaches.

Demonstrates depth of knowledge of engineering discipline(s) and leverages expertise on other projects.

Identifies developmental needs of group members.

Assists with the transfer of knowledge; coaches and mentors less experienced engineers.



Coach And Develop - Able to assesses strengths and development needs of employees. Able to provide challenging work assignments and give feedback with guidance from his or her own management.

Manage Execution - Solid understanding of how to manage execution. Manages the performance of self and others through the use of structured tools. Delegates effectively and regularly with solid support and follow through. Uses defined processes to manage execution.

Motivate Others - Some knowledge or awareness about how to motivate others. Pushes others when necessary to get things accomplished. Supports others in doing their best. Focuses on bottom-line results.

Team Development - Understands the basics of team development through training or familiarity with the techniques. Has experience in team development, including having led or coached a team-development activity or event.

Laboratory Operations - Working understanding of laboratory process flow including test planning, preparation, execution and analysis. Able to ensure that testing is done according to defined procedures.

Fundamentals Of Measurements - Understands that measurement instruments must be appropriately selected for a given application. Understands concepts of measurement range, precision, accuracy, and traceability.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

College, University, or equivalent degree in Engineering required. Advanced degrees are a benefit.


Intermediate level of relevant work experience required, such as responsibility for several components of a project or a complex component of a project.

Effectively coordinates activities and tasks with global lab management team.

Ensures TS16949/ISO14001 and ISO17025 accreditation requirements are met.

Perform duties and responsibilities in accordance with FGD-GD-20-02-00 Rev 4, Section 5.3, CFBU Laboratory Global Roles and Responsibilities (a copy will be make available upon request).

Additional Requirements:

Experience in quality metrics and process improvement.

Knowledge of TS16949/ISO14001 and ISO17025 accreditation requirements and experience in compliance auditing is a plus.

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary rate commensurate with experience.
