This is an exciting opportunity in Columbus, Indiana for a Supplier Quality Engineer- Technical Advisor. Cummins USA is where you can work on industry leading engineering projects such as New Product Development, Value Package Introduction and Systems Product Validation.
Your impact will happen in these and other ways:
Selects, develops, manages, and ensures defect-free performance of the business' supplier base with the objective of overall quality improvement.
Leads processes to drive improvements. Resolves supplier quality issues.
As a staff advisor, demonstrates deep experience in a focused area and provides leadership in this area globally, across the Business Unit. As a local expert, provides training and consults with others to develop their capabilities and to assure their success in difficult situations.
Participates in supplier evaluation, selection, and strategic sourcing process development.
Responsible for the supplier corrective action process including containment, root cause analysis, and corrective action.
Ensures suppliers use quality tools effectively.
Works with supplier to ensure all product requirements are met.
Oversees the supplier quality resources for new product introduction and current products to reduce supplier related issues, improve process capabilities, and ensure timely project launches.
Responsible for determining if all requirements are met by the supplier for new or changed products.
Measures supplier quality performance according to established procedures; drives appropriate improvements to meet established targets.
Facilitates continuous improvement activities to reduce defects.
Performs as the local technical expert for one or more SQIE specialties.
Communicates with and influences key external stakeholders and business leaders
Collaborates with industry peers within their area of expertise.
Sets strategic direction for a SQSW or specific SQIE process.
Advises and transfers knowledge, coaches and mentors less experienced engineers.
Advises leaders regarding the identification and resolution of complex problems.
Skills and Experience Required:
Quality Management and Leadership - Understanding the philosophies behind quality management. Application of management tools such as policy deployment, goal setting, planning, etc. Understanding customer satisfaction techniques. Professional should be able to communicate quality management philosophies (e.g. Deming) and lead tasks such as understanding customer and business needs, basic goal setting, planning processes and the use of results and customer satisfaction data for improvement. Use of these approaches routinely and has 4 years’ experience in this area.
Quality System Development, Implementation and Verification - Identify and integrate common elements such as design and process control, management responsibility, document control etc. Quality auditing planning, preparation and execution. Professional is able to interpret the requirements of ISO9001/TS 16949 for optimum deployment. Can manage the quality system including reporting on its effectiveness. Can train the requirements of ISO9001/TS 16949. Can interface with 3rd party assessors on the quality system. Can construct a Process audit plan, and lead a Process Audit.
Plan, Control and Assure Product and Process Quality - Processes for quality planning (e.g. Design Review), validation methods, and drawing interpretation. Principles of inspection sample plans, measurement types and selection of measurement tools, and metrology practices. Professional is able to create inspection and audit plans based on data. Able to use appropriate inspection equipment, including Coordinate Measuring Machines. Understands and demonstrates use of metrology systems and processes. Can train others in inspection and metrology techniques.
Problem Solving - Problem Solving and Improvement approaches, including understanding of tools/process type and selection, plus Corrective and Preventive Action processes. Professional needs no guidance with regards to this skill and can apply it in a wide range of work situations. Able to train others in problem solving. Must have knowledge of the applicable standards for the organization (ie. ISO/TS, etc.)
Five Core Tools - Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), Production Part Approval Process (PPAP), Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA), Measurement System Analysis (MSA) and Statistical Process Control (SPC) - Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), Production Part Approval Process (PPAP), Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA), Measurement System Analysis (MSA) and Statistical Process Control (SPC) - The Five Core tools are promoted by the AIAG as being fundamental in support of the automotive preferred quality system ISO/TS 16949, and delivering satisfactory product quality.
Six Sigma - Six Sigma: a disciplined approach to enterprise-wide quality and improvement and variation reduction using statistically-based tools. Professionals must be a trained Green Belt or trained Black Belt.
Project management - Project Management entails establishing and maintaining the "Balanced Triangle" of Scope, Schedule and Resources for a temporary effort (a "project"). Professional is proficient in the application of Cummins Project Management principles and practices in a wide range of work situations. This person is capable of effectively managing complex projects with little to no guidance. The Specialist is a person who is qualified to train and coach others in the development of Project Management skills. This group would include certified Cummins Project Management trainers and experienced PM's.
Internal Auditing - This skill is related to all types of auditing except financial auditing. This skills includes knowledge of audit/assessment processes, receiving and providing training, actual participation in audits/assessments, leading and managing audit/assessment processes, and certification. Professional has received a formal recognized audit/assessment training, participated in more than three formal audits and achieved certification. Knowledgeable of all aspects of audit and assessment including performing an audit. Is capable of coaching and developing.
7 to 10 years in a manufacturing environment
Leading project teams
Strong problem solving and presentation skills
Preparing reports and recommendations
Ability to lead technical discussions in problem solving on critical quality issues, projects and workshops
Experience in verification and validation of components / sub systems
Knowledge of engineering principles, practices and functionality of critical components
Ability to drive World Class quality performance in the manufacturing processes with key Commodities
Knowledge and experience within other plant functions – manufacturing and quality is highly desirable
Education, Licenses, Certifications
College, university, or equivalent degree in Engineering or a related technical or scientific subject required.

Base salary rate commensurate with experience.
