Cummins Columbus Midrange Engine Plant, Walesboro, IN, is a medium sized manufacturing facility certified to ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. The company is seeking a strong, motivated Site HSE Leader with significant practical HSE experience, including a supervisory role. The HSE Leader will be responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance at the site and leading HSE improvement efforts through the Health, Safety and Environmental and Energy Management System. Responsibilities will include maintaining regulatory compliance and interacting with regulatory agencies, leading HSEMS Management Reviews with site leadership, leading pollution prevention, resource reduction and health and safety management and control efforts, supervision of HSE Supervisors and Technicians, training employees, setting and achieving HSE objectives and targets, as well as driving functional excellence through the certified HSEMS.

This is an exciting opportunity in Walesboro, Indiana for a Health, Safety and Environmental Leader. Cummins USA is where you can work on industry leading projects. The right person develops & leads the overall Health, Safety and Environmental Management System (HSEMS) for the site. Responsibilities typically include the supervision of HSE Supervisors and Technicians, leading HSEMS Management Reviews with site leadership, training employees, interacting with regulatory agencies, leading pollution prevention efforts and health and safety management and control efforts, HSE objectives/targets, regulatory compliance, as well as maintaining HSEMS/ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certifications.

Your impact will happen in these and other ways:

  • Develops & leads the overall Health, Safety and Environmental Management System (HSEMS) for the site health and safety management and control efforts, HSE objectives/targets and maintaining HSEMS/ISO 14001/OHSAS 18001 certification.

  • Responsibilities typically include the supervision of HSE Supervisors and Technicians, leading HSEMS Management Reviews with site leadership, training employees, interacting with regulatory agencies

  • Leads efforts to ensure HSE regulatory compliance in a complex and highly regulated environment

  • Supports the identification and execution of environmental footprint reduction efforts consistent with company sustainability goals

  • Leads pollution prevention efforts

  • Anticipates, identifies and evaluates hazardous safety conditions and environmental risks.

  • Develops complex hazard control designs, methods, procedures and programs.

  • Implements, administers and advises others on hazard and risk control programs.

  • Interprets and applies internal and external standards in support of hazard and risk reduction and compliance.

  • Trains employees and other applicable personnel on HSE procedures, practices and controls.

  • Coaches and mentors HSE Supervisors and Technicians

Environmental Systems Management - The development and implementation of an (ISO 14001) environmental management system (EMS) promoting the continual improvement of environmental performance. The EMS should support the deployment and implementation of internal policies and procedures, the achievement of environmental objectives (site, business unit and corporate), and the minimization of our environmental impacts. The EMS ensures that we meet customer requirements related to environmental management. The functional ability to operate within the Information Technology System is integral to an effective EMS. The EMS should be structured in a manner that will facilitate the integration of a safety management system.

Control of Hazardous Substances - Control of Hazardous Substances requires knowledge of HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations & Emergency Response) basics, Global Harmonization, SDS (Safety Data Sheets), chemical labeling requirements, spill reporting, control methods, spill prevention, and chemical exposure.

Incident Investigation - The method of reporting the occurrence of an occupational injury/illness, near hit, or property damage. Incident investigations determine how and why these failures occur. Employees should be able to perform a thorough, effective incident investigation including root cause analysis, 5-why analysis and development of effective corrective actions.

Health and Safety Management Systems - An Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) management system provides a framework for managing OHS responsibilities so they become more efficient and more integrated into overall business operations. OHS management systems are based on standards that specify a process of achieving continuously improved OHS performance and compliance with legislation.



Significant experience, including leadership experience.


Experience in environmental compliance management required.


Experience in Ergonomics and Case Management is preferred.


Strong influencing and decision-making skills, proven experience creating an empowered culture.


Excellent communications skills with both internal and external personnel.


Demonstrated ability to generate and drive significant performance and process improvements.


Lead and assist with any onsite visits from agencies such as IOSHA and EPA.


Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation preferred.

Additional critical position responsibilities include:


Provide ownership and leadership for all HSE management systems at the site, including all HSE related standards, work processes, performance metrics, programs and initiatives. This includes maintaining HSEMS, ISO 14001, ISO 50001, Superior Energy Performance, OHSAS 18001 and the Management of Change program.


Creates, partners and involves others in program development and educational efforts. Work cross functionally with various departments to further the interests of establishing the desired safety culture in their areas.


Engage with plant leadership and cross functional team to develop key environmental initiatives. Manage, maintain and improve site environmental, health and safety compliance program


Mentor/coach site HSE teams to drive employee participation, attain safety related goals and to develop the culture of safety interdependence.


Plan/develop the sites annual HSE budget and related financial justifications.


Sets vision and strategic direction for team that aligns to company strategy.


Required Education, Licenses or Certifications

Bachelor of Science (or equivalent degree) in Engineering or Scientific field required

Base salary rate commensurate with experience.
