This is an exciting opportunity in Columbus, Indiana for a Global Packaging Engineering FE and Services Manager. Cummins USA is where you can work on industry leading projects.

Your impact will happen in these and other ways:

  • Overall Business Unit or Regional ABO Leadership responsibility for the Packaging function. Assumes leadership for researching and communicating packaging best practice and benchmarking data, leading and surveying organizational progress toward achieving Packaging Functional Excellence, developing and deploying Packaging

  • Functional Excellence through training, capable tools and processes.

  • Manage daily packaging operations for the BU or ABO

  • Prepare and manage the business unit annual packaging operating plan including expense resources, and capital

  • Develop, monitor and report the business unit packaging improvement project work plan and cost reduction targets

  • Drive continuous improvement in the supply chain, improving total cost and/or Customer /Supplier delivered quality

  • Work cross-functionally and with external entities (Customers & Suppliers) to identify and deliver improvement strategies for packaging of current products in order to reduce total cost, handling and waste disposal

  • Identify Packaging training requirements and insure development and deployment of required training

  • Oversee packaging projects globally to drive improvements in cost reduction, green initiatives and reduction of damages.

  • Drive the use of returnable packaging – setting the strategy, assist plants in identifying the opportunities and working with the business unit and ABOs for best practices.

  • Ensure direct suppliers conformance to the Cummins Global Packaging Standards

  • Provide functional support to Corporate Indirect Purchasing in negotiating agreements specific to packaging materials and services for the business unit

  • Identify Packaging Functional Excellence training requirements and insure development of required training to support plants

  • Research and publish best practices and benchmarking data

  • Monitors Packaging environmental and regulatory requirements and ensures business unit compliance

  • Support the implementation and operations integration of returnable container management, maintenance and tracking processes and (IT) systems

  • Primary contact to regularly interface with the Corporate Planning Packaging Function


Skills and Experience Required:

Supply Chain Knowledge - Completely understands the role of each function in the Supply Chain and how their Key Performance Indicators support the needs of end customers. Has been a leader in a number of Supply Chain functions and led cross-functional teams to drive improvements in the Supply Chain.

Coach And Develop - Solid understanding of coaching and development skills and tools. Coaches and develops direct reports and or project team members on basic performance issues and development needs. Dedicates appropriate time when coaching and developing others. Utilizes structured approach and appropriate tools when coaching and developing others. Provides relevant assignments to direct reports that address individual development needs.


  • 10 plus years of Packaging Engineering or related experience is required

  • Previous Manufacturing experience in Automotive or Industrial environment required.

  • High level of influencing capability.

  • Excellent verbal and oral communication skills.

  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong organization skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team.

  • Ability to identify and recommend varying solutions.

  • Proven ability to work with multiple priorities.

This position has the dual responsibility for global Packaging Engineering Functional Excellence in addition to leading a growing team of Packaging Engineers who provide engineering services for Cummins sites in North America. Critical work specific to this position are:

  • Leads the global training for all Packaging Processes and the leader for on-boarding all new Engineers

  • Development and deployment of new global Packaging Engineering and Management processes

  • Leads global Package FE sessions where anyone in a Packaging position can dial in an ask questions or share a best practice

  • Manager for the North America Packaging Engineering team which provide technical services to the manufacturing sites

  • Manages the consolidation and reporting of all global packaging related engineering work (Savings, Cost Avoidance, Waste Reduction...)

B.S in Packaging Engineering or applicable fields, MBA preferred

Base salary rate commensurate with experience.
