Position description

Business Improvement Leader provides leadership to improve the overall effectiveness of a function in support of the business. Directs the design, development and implementation of systems and processes to facilitate the achievement of functional excellence. Partners with the functional leadership to identify functional process, communications and talent needs and develops action plans to address those needs. Coordinates and monitors the execution of the improvement program for the Function as a whole.

Directs implementing functional excellence across CMI.

Participates in the COS Council.

Identifies key functional processes, determines key measures, and builds the functional implementation model.

Documents common aspects of key functional processes and works to ensure that processes, tools, and people associated with these processes are available and capable.

Works across multiple business units and ABO’s to drive improvements in common functional processes, tools, and people.

Works with cross-business unit Functional Excellence teams to ensure Alignment of initiatives.

Responsible for the development and maintenance of Statements of Functional Excellence, functional scorecard with measures of functional excellence, and skills matrix of required competencies for the function.

Directs the development and maintenance of the Functional Assessment Checklist which is used to identify gaps in functional excellence implementation.

Ensure functional needs are met through Functional Talent Management processes.

Responsible for the communication process for the function (implementation of the communication strategy)

Qualifications

Key Responsibilities

There are four primary areas that the Business Improvement (BI) leader is responsible for in Rocky Mountain. First, the BI leader provides leadership to improve the overall effectiveness of the Rocky Mountain business. The leader directs the design, development and implementation of systems and processes to improve the business in Rocky Mountain through Synchronize Business Planning process. The leader partners with the relevant functional leadership teams in CSSNA and CMI to identify functional process, communications and talent needs and develops action plans to address those needs. The leader coordinates and monitors the execution of the planning & improvement program for the Function as a whole. Second, the BI leader ensures that the Rocky Mountain region has a solid strategy to grow and improve the business, through a focused Goal tree management process, while aligning the direction of the region with the rest of CSSNA. He or she leads efforts to assess growth opportunities, create a “small bets” pipeline for growth initiatives, and help the leadership team prioritize investments to sequence growth initiatives for the next year, 3 years, and 5-10 years. Third, the BI leader acts as the Chief of Staff for the Regional Leadership Team (RLT) to ensure effective governance and management of the team. Fourth, the leader is responsible for several regional corporate functions including Communications, purchasing, facilities and fleet management of the business.

Business Improvement Area:

  • Lead, manage & execute the SBP process

  • Directs the implementation of functional excellence across region.

  • Participates in the BI performance cell.

  • Identifies key functional processes, determines key measures, and builds the functional implementation model.

  • Documents common aspects of key functional processes and works to ensure that processes, tools, and people associated with these processes are available and capable.

  • Works across CSSNA and multiple business units to drive improvements in common functional processes, tools, and people.

  • Works with cross-business unit Functional Excellence teams to ensure Alignment of initiatives, specifically with CSSNA and initiatives that come from the Corporate Strategy Group.

  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of Statements of Functional Excellence, functional scorecard with measures of functional excellence, and skills matrix of required competencies for the function.

  • Directs the development and maintenance of the Functional Assessment Checklist which is used to identify gaps in functional excellence implementation.

  • Ensure functional needs are met through Functional Talent Management processes.

  • Responsible for the communication process for the function (implementation of the communication strategy)

Growth and Strategy Area:

  • Works closely with CSSNA and the CMI Strategy Groups to ensure that the Rocky Mountain region has a solid strategy to grow and improve the business which is consistent with the direction of CSSNA.

  • Helps Sales and Operations pursue leading growth hypotheses in 2018-2021

  • Listens to the market to develop and nurture compelling growth hypotheses

  • Assess opportunities, with data driven decision-making; create “small bets” pipeline

  • Prioritize investments with our limited resources (including deciding what not to do) and sequence growth initiatives for the next year, 3 years, and 5-10 years

  • Engage employees and customers to develop big growth ideas and promote innovation within local branches

  • Roll out successful pilots across Rocky Mountain that can be duplicated throughout CSSNA; learn quickly and move forward from unsuccessful pilots

  • Create clear ownership and consistent systems so that we sustain initiatives long term

Chief of Staff:

  • Ensures effective governance and management of the Regional Leadership Team (RLT)

  • Responsible for team agendas and ensuring that action items get done

  • Actively drive Guardian leaders program

  • Ensure effective support, governance and execution of the RLT executive sponsorship portfolios (D&I, Wellness, Education, recognition, etc)

Skills:

Leadership - Lead team and effectively coach and develop.

COS - Coach on continuous improvement utilizing the COS framework. Have led functional excellence improvements.

Facilitating Internal Relationships and Consensus - Identify contact management requirements, set performance standards and develop strategies for optimizing productivity.

Manage Customer Relationship - Establish rapport, leverage sales productivity, meet commitments and develop strong working relationships with customers.

Develops Systems and Processes - Improve and expand the application of developing systems and processes at Cummins. Complete and manage critical work to the organization. Provides specific counsel in the use and application of structured systems and processes on complex work challenges. Develops organization-wide processes and systems to manage multiple and complex work demands.

Innovate - Improve and expand the application of innovation at Cummins. Generates new ideas that increase the capability of the organization. Drives innovation in highly complex, matrix environments. Defines new and improved processes that increase the capability of the organization. Considers new possibilities. Benchmarks organizations known for innovation and applies learnings. Identifies organizational barriers.

Analyze Issues – Uses structured tools and processes to define complex organization wide interrelationships and connections and frame key strategic issues. Consistently applies a wide variety of analytical tools and processes (e.g. Six Sigma) to complete projects and resolve complex problems.

Tolerance of Ambiguity - Apply effectively in all situations, while giving consideration to the overall objectives and operation of the business.

Champion Change - Applies change management tools and processes in innovative ways to anticipate issues. Considers implications in decision-making processes to anticipate potential barriers.

Set the Aim - Helps others align their work to higher level organizational goals. Applies measurement standards in achieving results. Provides clear direction and priorities in larger scale initiatives that connect tasks and activities to over-arching vision.

Six Sigma - A Certified Green Belt in one the three Six Sigma disciplines: (1)TDFSS (Technology Development for Six Sigma): the systematic methodology of integrating statistical tools into the Product Proceeding Technology process in order to achieve predictive design quality and meet Voice of the Customer requirements. (2)DFSS (Design for Six Sigma): similar tools used in the product and process development work in order to achieve predictive design quality and meet Voice of the Customer requirements. (3)DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) Six Sigma: a disciplined approach to enterprise-wide quality and improvement and variation reduction using statistically-based tools. Development work in order to achieve predictive design quality and meet Voice of the Customer requirements. (3)DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) Six Sigma: a disciplined approach to enterprise-wide quality and improvement and variation reduction using statistically-based tools.

Education, Licenses, Certifications:

College, university, or equivalent degree in field appropriate for the function required. Green Belt certification preferred.

Experience:

Significant relevant experience required, including managerial and budgetary experience. Significant experience in multiple sub-functional areas of function.

Demonstrated project management experience leading large complex cross regional projects. Significant experience leading process re-engineering.

Base hourly rate commensurate with experience.
