This is an exciting opportunity in Auburn Hills, Michigan for an Emissions Certification and Compliance Engineer- Technical Specialist

Your impact will happen in these and other ways:

  • Emissions certification and compliance Technical Specialist is responsible for all aspects of the actual vehicle or engine certification process as well as on-going compliance activities.

  • Technical Specialist applies specialized knowledge of engineering principles and practices across various areas and projects by interpreting, communicating and ensuring all environmental regulations and standards are adhered to as they impact company products.

  • Supports end-users in their efforts to understand product emissions requirements. Determines product and component environmental worthiness and adherence through coordinated testing and evaluation.

  • Collaborates with product, reliability and other related engineering groups to ensure requirements are met.

  • Applies technical expertise on complex components or projects and works under minimal supervision.

  • Leads small projects or portions of large projects.

  • Provides technical direction for a project or a project team.

  • Participates as a key contributor and is accountable for project success.

  • Influences at department or program management level.

  • Provides input on program-related decisions.

  • Proposes innovative initiatives and projects.

  • Demonstrates depth of knowledge of engineering discipline(s) and leverages expertise on other projects.

  • Troubleshoots complex problems and recommends appropriate actions.

  • Assists with the transfer of knowledge; coaches and mentors less experienced engineers.



Emissions Certification and Compliance - Knowledge of emission regulations, guidance, and advisories required for the certification and compliance of light-duty or heavy-duty vehicles and engines. Ability to read, comprehend and follow complex requirements and regulations for emissions certification and compliance.

Emissions Regulatory Affairs - Ability to lead the development of Cummins positions relative to regulatory proposals, represent the Company in working toward industry positions, work with the agency in promoting Cummins positions, and summarize and communicate the regulatory requirements within Cummins.

Systems And Processes - Ability to identify problems resulting from lack of formal processes, and then develop and implement effective solutions. Ability to guide others in the use and application of structured systems and processes.

Cross-Functional Knowledge - Understands the interactions between various functions related to understanding and meeting emission requirements.

Ability and motivation to work with minimal supervision.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

College, university, or equivalent degree in Engineering required.


Prior emissions certification and compliance work experience is required.

Additional Information:

This position is located at FCA Technical Center, Auburn Hills, Michigan.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead vehicle emissions certification activities in collaboration with Cummins and FCA engineering teams.

  • Must have understanding of the emissions regulatory requirements for light-duty or heavy duty vehicles and ability to work with product teams to ensure these requirements are followed and met.

  • Responsible for emission certification testing at FCA chassis lab (schedule, write work orders, and coordinate emissions testing).

  • Prepare and submit data and emissions certification application to EPA and CARB. Work closely with EPA and CARB to obtain emissions certificates.

  • Responsible for the emission compliance reporting and in-use verification testing program.

Base salary rate commensurate with experience.
