Job Description:

  • Applies highly specialized knowledge of materials science with engineering principles and practices, to identify and advance solutions for design, manufacturing and quality problems.

  • Leads cross functional teams on projects that require, material selection, failure analysis, material characterization, interpretation and writing of specifications, product quality inspections, material process quality audits, material process development, production process validation and material property data. Initiates evaluation and implementation of beneficial emerging material and material processing technology.

  • Leads large or multiple engineering projects.

  • Performs as the local technical expert for one or more engineering specialties.

  • Solves complex problems impacting multiple projects.

  • Communicates with and influences key external stakeholders and business leaders.

  • Drives and manages system level requirements for projects or programs.

  • Makes critical project or product related decisions.

  • Collaborates with industry peers within their discipline.

Laboratory Test Technology - Metallurgical - The engineer shall have specialized knowledge and experience with basic and advanced chemical & metallurgical lab test technology, to the extent that they are able to drive innovation and provide technical direction for a project team on the characterization of physical, mechanical, chemical and micro structural properties.

Failure Analysis - The engineer shall have specialized knowledge and experience with failure analysis, to the extent that they are able to drive innovation and provide technical direction for a project team to collect the forensic, manufacturing, and service data needed to determine root cause and deliver short / long term counter measures.

Material Characterization Techniques - The engineer shall have specialized knowledge and experience in characterizing materials/substances based upon results of analysis techniques such as identifying atomic structure, nano-scale compositions, surface morphology, and surface chemistry as relevant to the sub-discipline.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

PhD, Masters of Science, Bachelor of Science, or equivalent degree in engineering required.


7 years of relevant work experience required.


This position is based in Materials Engineering Laboratory the Seymour Engine Plant.


Overall requirements: The candidate shall have knowledge of cast and machined component manufactured from steels, cast irons, and non-ferrous alloys. The candidate shall be generally knowledgeable about metallurgical and chemical lab test technology to solve metallurgical/materials engineering problems that are related to engines and their after-treatment. The candidate shall articulate lab work plans, and collect and report data using the appropriate metallurgical characterization techniques to discuss with our customers.

Failure analysis: The candidate shall have the ability to perform failure analysis to the extent that individual is able to initiate root cause data-gathering, correctly interpret the data and report results to customers with limited guidance.

Material characterization techniques: The candidate shall have a fundamental knowledge of mechanical properties of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, structure-property correlation, metallurgical characterization technique such as hardness/tensile testing, non-destructive testing, fractography, microstructural evaluation, scanning electron microscopy and other good metallurgical lab practices.

Other skills: Metallurgical knowledge of cast and wrought metal parts and assemblies at higher temperature will be beneficial. The position entails PPAP/Source approval related metallurgical work for new components, metallurgical consultation, and recommendations for improvements. Other job tasks include, but are not limited to, metallurgical process design, development/validation for production support, SQI support and Customer development. An understanding of automotive quality assurance will be considered an asset. Great interpersonal and communication skills to partner with supply chain in supplier selection, validation, and post-launch troubled shooting are desired.

Education & Experience:

A Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical or Materials engineering. A higher degree will be an advantage. 3 years of relevant work experience is required.
