This is an exciting opportunity in Rocky Mount, NC for an Industrial Engineer. Cummins USA is where you can work on industry leading engineering projects such as New Product Development, Value Package Introduction and Systems Product Validation.

Your impact will happen in these and other ways:

  • Assists with the design, improvement, and installation of integrated manufacturing or administrative systems which use people, materials, information, equipment, and energy.

  • Assists with the creation of standard work methods for new and current production lines.

  • Assists with the design of safe and efficient work stations for manufacturing environments, using plant layout, ergonomic, and work station design principles.

  • Assists with cost analysis on make vs. buy decisions for component or sub-assemblies.

Skills and Experience Required:

  • Minimal level of relevant work experience required.

  • Continuous Process Improvement - This skill involves Cummins Operating System (COS) Practice 2 -Synchronized Flows. Continuous Process Improvement works to eliminate waste, improve quality, and reduce production time and cost by using Continuous Process Improvement tools. Its focus is the reduction of the 7 wastes (Over-production, Waiting time, Transportation, Over-processing, Inventory, Motion and Scrap). Has experience using continuous process improvement methodologies. Able to actively participate in continuous process improvement projects with little guidance or additional training. Able to recognize continuous process improvement opportunities in their work area.

  • Fundamentals Of Manufacturing - Basic competence in the body of knowledge as defined by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers for a Certified Manufacturing Technologist (CMfgT). The body of knowledge includes the following areas: Mathematics, Applied Science, Process Design, Materials, Manufacturing Processes, Manufacturing Management, Manufacturing Economics, Quality Control, Computer Applications, and Automation. Working knowledge of the Fundamentals of Manufacturing. More than 2 years of experience working as a Manufacturing Engineer, but not yet a Certified Manufacturing Technologist (Society of Manufacturing Engineers), or local equivalent).

  • Work Measurement Studies - This skill involves being able to perform and utilize work measurement studies or how long a job takes to perform. The experts who conduct work measurement studies should not only be able to conduct the studies, but apply the special rules to optimize the accuracy of the studies. Knows how to conduct a work measurement study to develop a work standard using pre-determined time elements and system guidelines

  • Line Balancing - The ability to balance a line. This requires an evaluation of work activities to be performed by a person or machine in relationship to the customer/product demand rate. A well balanced line or process will take the shortest amount of time to deliver a product and will be the most efficient. Knows how to balance a line if provided the required information. Understands the terms for work in process, level loading, throughput time, take time, and process efficiency level. Can calculate each of these values from a data set.

  • Workstation Design - This skill involves being able to design an operator station. Design of an operator station requires knowledge of anthropometrics, ergonomics, National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) safety standards, office layout guidelines, etc. Many of these standards must be utilized to develop an efficient work station design. Can apply work station design standards to design an ergonomically sound station for one manufacturing operation or office space.

  • Process Documentation - This skill involves being able to properly document a process. Process documentation defines the sequence in which to perform process steps, along with the specifications for the process that are important to follow to ensure a quality and consistent output is produced. Use process documentation to perform a work task or manufacture a product. Can write process documentation for a manufacturing process or an administrative process with the information provided. Understands the important specifications that must be defined to ensure that the process yields the desired outcome.

  • Process Layout - The ability to develop process layouts which encompasses all equipment, tooling and material flows necessary to provide for an effective Product Assembly process. The process layout should be completed using AutoCAD and should be to scale, including all process steps while accounting for Safety, Quality, Ergonomics, Throughput, and Product cost. Has participated in several workstation designs as part of a cross functional team.

Required Education, Licenses or Certifications

College, university, or equivalent degree in Industrial Engineering required.

Base hourly rate commensurate with experience .
