Service Writer, Cummins Southern Plains


Oversee/manage the service department through the functions of delegating authority, assuring quality and efficient service, and hiring and training service personnel. Promote the principle of customer-led quality in every action with external and internal customers.

  • Increase service sales by making targeted personal sales calls per customer account list using various sales promotion techniques.

  • Maintain acceptable efficiency and recovery rates.

  • Review and approve service department payroll.

  • Maintain service department in a way to project total quality and customer-led mindset.

  • Promote the overall appearance of the service facility by maintaining a clean and orderly service department. Develop a sense of professionalism in the service department.

  • Ensure that all shop safety rules and procedures are carried out.

  • Delegate authority to competent service personnel to carry on the service department’s work in an efficient and productive manner.

  • Plan shop workload in cooperation with other departments affected to assure prompt completion of service work.

  • Ensure that all shop tools and equipment are properly maintained and accounted for. Initiate needed repairs or replacement of tools. Request additional tools required to ensure highly productive and quality work.

  • Ensure that all service programs, policies and processes are carried out by all service personnel.

  • Hire, dismiss, and review all service department personnel subject to approval by senior management and the local Operations Manager.

  • Ensure that service trucks are properly maintained and in good working order.

  • Ensure compliance with the company tool program.

  • Oversee and schedule training for all service department personnel.

  • Manage the Customer Support for Excellence teams.

  • Maintain, Manage, and enforce the safety program.

  • Approve policy claims.

  • Make sales calls with the Operations Manager and sales reps to obtain potential customers, as well as current users or sellers of Cummins products to promote business and retain customers.

  • Resolve customer disputes in connection with either factory or distributorship warranties.

  • Resolve internal disputes.

  • Control disposal of waste products for branch (e.g. anti-freeze.)

  • Assist with the development of annual plans for the service department and measure performance against the plans on a monthly basis.


  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Extensive knowledge of all Cummins products.

  • Five years experience in power generation or electrical mechanics.

  • Must possess leadership qualities, integrity, and a sales orientation. Also must be a motivator, diplomat, and express good judgment in dealing with others.

  • Willingness and confidence to be active in increasing customer contacts.

  • Must possess superior interpersonal and customer relation skills.

  • Must have knowledge and ability to operate computer in service functions.

  • Must have extensive understanding and knowledge of warranty and service programs available for Cummins products.

  • Ability to travel to customer’s offices and facilities.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

  • Must have an internal drive for customer service and provide an elevated level of service for internal and external customers.

  • Must comply with safety rules and regulations and apply them to daily work routines for personal safety and the safety of others.
