Qualifications

This is an exciting opportunity for Thermal & Fluid Science Engineer – Technical Specialists #IN643 in Columbus, Indiana.

Your impact will happen in these and other ways:

  • Apply technical expertise in fundamentals of physics and thermodynamics on complex system analysis and integration.

  • Provide guidance using specialized knowledge of Thermal and Fluid Sciences Functional Excellence (TSFE) tools and processes to achieve optimized and robust solutions for engine performance and emissions.

  • Develop complex new analyses for vehicle, engine system and test cell models utilizing Matlab/Simulink and GT Power.

  • Engage VPI and customers to plan and direct model based analysis strategy and delivery of model based validation.

  • Work with partner teams to deliver and integrate models in support of validation plans applying appropriate strategy including pure simulation, Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL), component or system.

  • Troubleshooting of Complex Electro-Mechanical Systems and recommend appropriate actions.

  • Utilize knowledge of energy conversion systems to evaluate after treatment, air handling, fuel and filtration systems.

  • Use plant simulation models to test algorithms and understand the dynamic behavior of the air handling systems in the simulation of engine performance.

  • Design new vehicle tests and new complex test cell tests using engines and aftertreatment to determine evaluation methods.

  • Develop a systematic problem solving approach using Six Sigma tools and Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) to identify the root cause and implement robust fixes.

  • Report on key deliverables and comply with reliability and performance targets.

  • Interpret current software design and develop new software strategies and algorithm design for issue resolution.

Skills and Experience Required:

Experience to include:

  • Fundamentals of physics and thermodynamics

  • Thermal and Fluid Sciences Functional Excellence (TSFE)

  • Matlab/Simulink and GT Power

  • Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL)

  • Complex Electro-Mechanical System

  • Energy conversion systems

  • Six Sigma tools and Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA)

Required Education, Licenses or Certifications

  • Positions require a Master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or related field and 2 years of experience as a Systems, Performance, Aftertreatment, Emissions or Thermal & Fluid Science Engineer, or related position.

  • Alternatively, the employer will accept a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or related field and 5 years of experience as a Systems, Performance, Aftertreatment, Emissions or Thermal & Fluid Science Engineer, or related position.

WORK HOURS: 40 hours/week [8:00 am to 5:00 pm]

Base hourly rate commensurate with experience plus bonus.
