This is an exciting opportunity in Columbus, IN for an Electronic Controls Engineer. Cummins USA is where you can work on industry leading engineering projects such as New Product Development, Value Package Introduction and Systems Product Validation.

Your impact will happen in these and other ways:

  • Applies basic knowledge of engineering principles and practices to assigned tasks to develop and support activities in the area of electrical and electronics engineering. This may include one or more of the following: Developing the electrical and electronics specifications, Developing the electrical and electronics specifications, Designing electrical and electronic systems and components, Analyzing and simulating electrical and electronic capabilities, Implementing and generating software, Verifying and validating controls, hardware, or software, Tuning controls, Releasing controls, hardware, or software, Troubleshooting controls, hardware, or software issues, Servicing and maintaining controls, hardware, or software, Managing life-cycle obsolescence, Design and Analysis of Electric Generators/Alternators and motors, Electrical Circuit Design, Performance simulation of Electrical Power Systems.

  • Electrical and Electronics includes all electrical and electronic elements within the system: Open and closed loop controls Diagnostics and OBD Algorithms Electronic control modules and related microcontroller architectures Electrical and Electronic devices Embedded software Sensors and switches Actuators, mechatronics, electric motors and alternators/generators, and relays Ignition systems Battery systems Electrical and Electronic tools and information products Electrical and Electronic tool interfaces Interconnects and harnesses Datalinks and communication networks Machine electronics interfaces.

  • Typical roles include: Electrical and Electronics systems, Hardware, Software, Controls and diagnostics design and Electronic controls application.

  • Uses prescribed and innovative methods, and works with limited guidance.

  • Participates as a team member and actively contributes towards team goals.

  • Carries out partially defined and moderately complex tasks.

  • Demonstrates good understanding and applies knowledge of an engineering discipline.

  • Applies engineering and/or scientific skills and continues to develop experience in creating engineering solutions.

Skills and Experience Required:

  • Work Experience Requirement: 3 years of experience as a Controls or Systems Engineer or related position.

  • This could be COOP or summer Intern experience.

  • Apply specialized knowledge of engineering principles and practices across various areas and projects in the development and maintenance of aftertreatment system requirements based on Voice of Customer (VOC) product integration and validation plans.

  • Evaluate system architecture and design concepts and allocate aftertreatment system requirements to subsystems and components. Develop interface agreements between the aftertreatment system and the engine or machine, installation/application guidelines and quality assurance procedures in order to manage technical responsibilities with the customer.

  • Apply Robust Engineering Functional Excellence rules and tools to compliment company Value Package Introduction (VPI) workflow.

  • Determine Aftertreatment System Architecture by identifying new, unique or difficult system level functions utilizing one or more identification tools.

  • Develop and maintain the aftertreatment system level Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (DFMEA) and identify and propose risk mitigation paths at the subsystem and component levels.

  • Identify and advise team members on the use of appropriate Six Sigma Tools and Methodologies including Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) and Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (DFMEA) within each phase of VPI.

  • Arbitrate and drive resolution to interface requirement conflicts at an aftertreatment system and subsystem level.

  • Apply technical expertise and lead aftertreatment projects ensuring the design and architecture meets translated emission regulations.

  • Provide technical direction for a project or a project team and participate as a key contributor accountable for project success.

  • Provide input on program-related decisions on management level and propose innovative initiatives and projects.

  • Demonstrate depth of knowledge of engineering disciplines and leverage expertise on projects and processes including identifying and developing requirements for system design.

  • Troubleshoot complex problems and recommend appropriate actions.

  • Assist with the transfer of knowledge and coach and mentor less experienced engineers on concept design and architecture evaluation.

Required Education, Licenses or Certifications

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering or related field.

Base hourly rate commensurate with experience .
