Engineering Drafting Technician


Uses appropriate technologies to create drawings and models as requested through engineering work requests.

Creates and maintains quality engineering product drawings and solid models through the application of company, industry, national, and international standards.

Processes internal engineering Work Requests by communicating and working directly with originators of the Work Requests; delivers completed work requests on schedule or contact the customer to modify the schedule as necessary.

Participates in Design Reviews as necessary.Leads or participates in the Drawing Quality Review process as needed.

Engages with required functional areas to review completed drawings and models and modify as needed.Contributes to the design of components through layout studies and dimensional stack ups.

Checks the work of other Drafting Technicians and Apprentices.Understands and applies appropriate company and department rules and guidelines to work.

Works with and trains apprentices and technicians.Interfaces with customers, suppliers, engineers, and other functions.Coordinates programs including planning, scheduling, ordering, and tracking.

Participates in the maintenance of quality procedures.Leads and participate in improvement projects.

Develops and gives presentations to customers and suppliers.Knows and complies with all safety policies and procedures.

Demonstrates confidentiality as required.Participates in self- and team-audits and associated corrective action.

Performs other miscellaneous duties, as required, to get the job done.


High school diploma, GED or equivalent required with Department of Labor Certification OR Associates degree from an accredited program in mechanical engineering drafting or related field and at least two years of relevant experience OR Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering drafting or related field.Must pass all related testing.

Department of Labor Certification OR Four year experience/education requirement accomplished through either Bachelors degree in related field OR Associates degree in related field and at least two years of relevant experience.

  • Perform design work using 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) drafting and drawing creation in collaboration with customer’s machine systems integration

  • Familiarity with CAD data management system/vault

  • Work with design engineering staff to establish accurate bills of materials, drawings, for new or supporting design

  • Communicate with component suppliers and customers to verify correct design calculations and customer specifications by means of design reviews and component approvals

  • Create 2D drawings/layouts and specification development for component suppliers

  • Select materials and make drawing changes

  • Utilize GD&T practices

  • Practice and perform dimensional variation analysis (DVA)

  • Work with bill of materials for internal procurement personnel for product release to the Cummins business system

  • Communicate with vendors and customers to verify correct customer and vendor design specifications

  • Provide design post-production support to internal production and the customer

  • Assist manufacturing with technical issues, with direction from staff

  • Use of 3D design tool, Creo preferred

  • Strong organization and time management skills to prioritize and multi-task with efficiency

  • Understanding of agriculture and construction machinery and equipment interfacing systems to the diesel engine

  • Obtain accurate information from the customers/vendors through excellent communication skills

  • Perform other duties as assigned
